Caring About You And Your Environment - Information Sheet # 1
This is the first in a series of information sheets that relate to your health and the environment. I hope you find the information useful. Any suggestions or comments, especially those I can use in future work are most welcome.
Formaldehyde (methyl aldehyde)
This chemical is used as an insecticide and fungicide; as a drying agent and preservative in cosmetics; as an antimicrobial agent in detergents, cosmetics and other domestic chemicals. Products that may contain formaldehyde includes shampoos, bubble baths, hair conditioners, skin disinfectants and mouthwashes.
Formaldehyde is classified by the NOHSC (National Occupational Health & Safety Commission) as a category 2 carcinogen (cancer causing substance).
Your health can be affected – it can cause asthma-like allergies, as well as skin and lung allergies. Formaldehyde is known to have high chronic toxicity to aquatic life.
You can improve the quality of your life by using products that contain NO formaldehyde or other harmful chemicals. At the same time, you are saving our environment.

Caring About You And Your Environment - Information Sheet # 2
This is the second in a series of information sheets that relate to your health and the environment. I hope you find the information useful. Any suggestions or comments, especially those I can use in future work are most welcome.
Head Lice
Outbreaks of head lice among children at school, kindergarten and crèche are common. If you are concerned about using chemically-based shampoos for treatment, here is a natural alternative: mix a few drops of tea tree oil (Melaleuca oil) in shampoo, massage the mixture into the scalp and wash every day until the eggs are removed. Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic, natural fungicide and it is aromatic and non-caustic.
The use of shampoos with tea tree oil will reduce the chances of being infected with head lice, as head lice don’t like the smell of tea tree oil.
